Natural gas generator installation at a data center facility
Fuel choice

Diesel vs natural gas vs LPG for a data center generator

Diesel is still the Uptime default. Gas and LPG are the right call when the pipeline is reliable, run hours are long, or the grid interconnect is years out.

Most Tier III and Tier IV halls still spec diesel so fuel sits on the plot and does not depend on a gas utility. Natural gas fits bridge and prime duty, and many standby sites with a stable pipeline. LPG fits edge halls with no pipe. Yuyang does not sell diesel data-center sets. We spec natural gas and LPG from 150 kW to 1.4 MW, paralleled for N+1.

At a glance

Pick a fuel path

Diesel needs a tank on the plot. Gas and LPG depend on supply — pipeline gas or delivered LPG inventory.

Diesel

Reference only — not a Yuyang SKU

Tank on plot, zero gas dependency

When to use

Spec is locked to on-site fuel, or the local gas utility has reliability problems of its own.

When not to

You want lower NOx and particulates, or would rather skip a tank farm and a fuel-polishing program.

Natural gas

Yuyang factory spec

Reliable pipeline, long run hours

When to use

The pipeline is stable and you need bridge or prime duty, or standby with lower emissions than diesel.

When not to

There is no gas utility on site and running one in is not realistic.

LPG

Yuyang factory spec

Edge site, no pipeline

When to use

The site has no pipeline — edge halls, cable landings, remote builds — and bottled or bulk LPG can be staged.

When not to

Runtime needs to outlast whatever LPG inventory the plot can store.

Dual-fuel, only if the site needs it. Some owners want a diesel-style start with gas runtime. We configure that against a load list — it is not a catalog SKU.

Diesel

Industry default

Who uses it
Tier III / IV standby where fuel must stay on site
Runtime / fuel
On-site tanks, fast start, fuel polishing required
Emissions / permitting
Higher NOx and PM; tank and spill rules

Not in catalog — we spec gas or LPG instead

Not in catalog

Natural gas

What we build

Who uses it
Bridge / prime while waiting on the grid; long-hour standby with a reliable pipeline
Runtime / fuel
Pipeline supply, no tank aging
Emissions / permitting
Lower particulates; often simpler air permits
Yuyang
150 kW – 1.4 MW per unit, parallel-ready

LPG / propane

What we build

Who uses it
Edge and remote halls with no pipeline
Runtime / fuel
Bottled or bulk LPG, simpler logistics than diesel tanks at small sites
Emissions / permitting
Cleaner than diesel; local storage rules still apply
Yuyang
150 kW – 500 kW+, low-noise options

Dual-fuel

Who uses it
Sites that want diesel-like start with gas runtime
Runtime / fuel
Hybrid fuel path, site-specific
Emissions / permitting
Depends on the mix and local rules

What leaves our factory

Natural gas and LPG generator sets, ATS-ready, parallel-ready. Open, container, or low-noise. High-ambient and coastal packages on request. We do not keep 2–4 MW diesel, HVO, or battery-only plants in this line.

FAQ

Diesel vs gas questions we get on quotes

Short answers. The table above is the full comparison. Request a quote →

Yes, when the pipeline is reliable or you are running bridge/prime for months. The UPS covers start. It is a poor swap if the spec requires on-site fuel with no gas service.

No. We spec natural gas and LPG. If the bid is diesel-only, we will pass rather than stretch the catalog.

Pipeline gas runs as long as the utility gas stays up. LPG runs as long as bulk or bottle inventory. Diesel runs as long as the tanks and the polishing plan.

Often yes at edge and remote sites. Local storage and setback rules still apply. Send the plot constraints with the load list.

Configured on request. It is for sites that want a diesel-like start with gas runtime, not a default package.
